In 40 years' time...

  • 19th Oct, 2010 at 8:06 PM
Here's what I found online today...

http://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/Study-predicts-women-power-afpsg-3259234515.html?x=0

In the next 40 years, an unprecedented number of women will be in positions of power, Muslim immigration to the West will rise, and office workers will be unchained from their cubicles, a report released last week says.

South America will see sustained economic growth and the Middle East will become "a tangle of religions, sects and ethnicities," says the report by Toffler Associates, a consultancy set up by the author of the 1970s blockbuster "Future Shock."

Toffler Associates released its predictions for the next 40 years to mark the 40th anniversary of "Future Shock," in which author Alvin Toffler studied the 1970s to see what would happen in the future.

His prognosis 40 years ago was that technology and science would develop at such an accelerated pace that many people would be unable to process the enormous amounts of new information available and would disconnect from life.

Some of "Future Shock's" prognoses have come true, including that news would travel around the world instantly, that same-sex couples would wed and raise families, and that violence and environmental disasters would increase and have broad consequences -- like the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

So it might be worth paying heed to what Toffler Associates foresees for the next 40 years, including container ships getting larger to meet increasing demand for faster, cheaper delivery of goods, and the Suez and Panama Canals being "improved."

They envision more and more people growing their own food to reduce their dependence on large manufacturers and distributors, and the proliferation of high-speed Internet and low-cost video-conferencing freeing office workers from their cubicles and working from anywhere in the world.

Only a very small number of states will continue to behave as "rogue" nations, Toffler Associates says, naming North Korea and Iran.

"A true test for political leaders will be in how they handle relationships with these nations and to what extent they allow them to control geo-political agendas," the consultancy says.

China will position itself as a global economic power, allying with Brazil and India to influence currency use and with Venezuela and African nations to ensure its energy needs are met.

The United States, meanwhile, will depend on China for 17 rare earth metals that are essential to produce everything from weapons components to radars to wind turbines and hybrid cars.

The development of alternative energy forms will create "losers in a post-petroleum world" including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, several Gulf states, Russia and Venezuela, the report says.

Christianity will rise rapidly in the global South, while Muslims will migrate in increasing numbers to the West, where their presence will reshape public attitudes and government policies.

Climate change will fuel conflict as melting sea ice exposes mineral wealth and oil fields in the Arctic and as rising sea levels force large populations from their homes.

An aging population will cause spending on long-term care services for the elderly to nearly quadruple by 2050, and social security and Medicare, the US health insurance for the elderly, will cease to "exist as we know them," Toffler managing partner Deborah Westphal told AFP.

"We don't know what will replace them; we just know that we will be in a different type of society with different types of people and different needs," she said.

As for women, they will take on leadership positions around the globe at a never-before-seen rate, as countries realize "you can't be successful with just 50 percent of the population participating in decision-making," Westphal said.

And in the next 40 years, information-gathering will speed up even more as the world enters the Petabyte Age, Toffler Associates predicts.

Petabytes -- which are 10-to-the-15th-power bytes, or measures of computer files, hard disk space, and memory -- are used today only to measure the storage space of multiple hard drives or collections of data.

Between now and 2050, measuring data in petabytes will become the norm, and so will data saturation, Toffler Associates predicts.

Seriously, it does not sound so bad... I do hope we have enough food for everyone though.... the only thing that worries me was the issue about people going back to planting their own food.... ?!?!?!!?! Then what is going to happen to Singaporeans?? Where do we do the planting?? If we still have depand on other countries for food.... then would the highest cost of living in Singapore be FOOD?!?!?! now THAT would be a sad day...

October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

  • 18th Oct, 2010 at 11:29 AM

I came across this during my daily morning net surfing… thought this is a very useful and informative piece, so I thought I should post it for to share and for me to refer back in the future.

Yahoo Question:

How the breast cancer develop in women and what are the preventions for it?

Best Answer:

Understanding BREAST CANCER is important as this is the first lesson of our AWARENESS PROGRAMME, which all my sisters should know -

The Breasts sit on the chest muscles that cover the ribs. Each breast is made of 15 to 20 lobes. Lobes contain many smaller lobules. Lobules contain groups of tiny glands that can produce milk. Milk flows from the lobules through thin tubes called ducts to the nipple. The nipple is in the center of a dark area of skin called the areola. Fat fills the spaces between the lobules and ducts.

The breasts also contain lymph vessels. These vessels lead to small, round organs called lymph nodes. Groups of lymph nodes are near the breast in the axilla (underarm), above the collarbone, in the chest behind the breastbone, and in many other parts of the body. The lymph nodes trap bacteria, cancer cells, or other harmful substances.

Understanding Cancer-

Cancer begins in cells, the building blocks that make up tissues. Tissues make up the organs of the body.

Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old, they die, and new cells take their place.

Sometimes, this orderly process goes wrong. New cells form when the body does not need them, and old cells do not die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor.

Tumors can be benign or malignant:

Benign tumors are not cancer:

* Benign tumors are rarely life-threatening.
* Generally, benign tumors can be removed. They usually do not grow back.
* Cells from benign tumors do not invade the tissues around them.
* Cells from benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body.

Malignant tumors are cancer:

* Malignant tumors are generally more serious than benign tumors. They may be life-threatening.
* Malignant tumors often can be removed. But sometimes they grow back.
* Cells from malignant tumors can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs.
* Cells from malignant tumors can spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. Cancer cells spread by breaking away from the original (primar) tumor and entering the bloodstream or lymphatic system. The cells invade other organs and form new tumors that damage these organs. The spread of cancer is called metastasis.

When breast cancer cells spread, the cancer cells are often found in lymph nodes near the breast. Also, breast cancer can spread to almost any other part of the body. The most common are the bones, liver, lungs, and brain. The new tumor has the same kind of abnormal cells and the same name as the primary tumor. For example, if breast cancer spreads to the bones, the cancer cells in the bones are actually breast cancer cells. The disease is metastatic breast cancer, not bone cancer. For that reason, it is treated as breast cancer, not bone cancer. Doctors call the new tumor "distant" or metastatic disease.

To my understanding there is no significant etiology and or prevention of Cancer as a whole. The American Cancer Society reports that there is no Sure Way to prevent breast cancer. However, early detection is critical and can mean the difference between life and death. What you can be sure of when it comes to cancer prevention is that making small changes to your everyday life might help reduce your chances of getting cancer. Although these measures provide no guarantee that you would not develop the disease, they will give you a start for breast cancer prevention, barring the certain risks over which you have no control - your age and genetic makeup.

For prevention of Breast Cancer, if at all we can do anything, it starts with our own Lifestyle choices and healthy habits - such as staying physically active, limiting alcohol and eating right. Among the easiest things to control are what you eat and drink and how active you are. Here are some strategies that may help you decrease your risk of breast cancer:

- Limit alcohol. A strong link exists between alcohol consumption and breast cancer. The type of alcohol consumed - wine, beer or mixed drinks - seems to make no difference. To help protect against breast cancer, limit alcohol to less than one drink a day or avoid alcohol completely.

- Maintain a healthy weight. There is a clear link between obesity and breast cancer. This is especially if you gain the weight after menopause. Excess fatty tissue is a source of circulating estrogen in your body. And breast cancer risk is linked to how much estrogen you are exposed to during your lifetime.

- Stay physically active. Regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight and in lowering your risk of breast cancer. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise daily.

- Consider limiting fat in your diet. Results from the most definitive study of dietary fat and breast cancer risk to date suggest a slight decrease in risk of invasive breast cancer for women who eat a low fat diet. A low fat diet may protect against breast cancer in another way if it helps you maintain a healthy weight.
- Avoid hormone replacement therapy if possible. Studies have shown a link between long time hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and breast cancer. This link suggests that combined HRTs (estrogen and progesterone) raise the risk factor. HRT also make mammograms less effective. If you need to take hormone replacement therapy, talk to your doctor about the risk and your personal condition.
- Check your breasts every month. Checking your breasts every month may not reduce your risk of developing breast cancer, but it may help detect breast cancer early. The earlier breast cancer is found, the less aggressive the treatment.
- Don't forget to get a mammogram - it's not a choice. Like the breast self exam, a mammogram would not prevent the development of breast cancer, but it can detect cancer. Sometimes it can be difficult to feel a lump in the breast, and a mammogram is likely to detect any lumps that cannot be felt.
- Have children earlier in life, if possible. Having no children or having your first child in your mid-thirties or later increases the risk.
- Consider breastfeeding instead of formula feeding. Researchers believe that the months without a period during pregnancy and breast feeding may reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer.
- Be cautious about Pesticides. Breast cancer incidence are linked to pesticide exposure. The molecular structure of some pesticides closely resembles that of estrogen. This means they may attach to estrogen receptor sites in your body.

- Avoid taking Unnecessary Antibiotics - Scientists recently found a link between antibiotic use and breast cancer - the longer antibiotics were used, the greater the risk of breast cancer.

- Nothing you do can guarantee your life will be cancer free. But if you practice healthy habits and consult your doctor about extra measures you can take, you may at least reduce your risk of this potentially fatal disease.-

When your mouse dies...

  • 5th Oct, 2010 at 6:25 PM

We were in an advance excel workshop last Saturday. The company has organized this workshop for those of us who were interested to learn more about excel.

The lecturer kept teaching us the various short-cuts we could use on the keyboard to replace commands we usually uses our mouse to do. After sensing that we were not very interested in learning the short-cuts, he commented that it would be very useful for us, if our mouse decides to die on us one day…. To which David from AI replied… ‘Then I will look for Jason.’ To the laughter of the class and of course the lecturer could ‘catch no ball’.

*Jason is a good friend, and most importantly, our company’s MIS manager…

Novels for sale!

  • 11th May, 2009 at 5:13 PM

I have 2 novels by this new writer - Jane Costello.

Till date she has written 2 books and I have them both. They are really good stories, and I would have loved to keep them except I do not have anymore space at home for more books. (Family is putting me on a book diet...sigh)

For both books, I have read them twice, very good condition and of coz no missing pages.

1) Bridesmaids (Four weddings without the Funeral)

2) The Nearly-Weds

I would like to sell both books together for $18. (Retail: abt $36)

You can find out more about the novels and the writer at http://www.janecostello.com/

Please let me know if you are interested! :)

I came across this blog while surfing the net today. Because of work, I have been looking at blogs and actually found 2 blogs managed by boys (before NS, all men are boys = Singapore version) and in one of the blogs by this guy name Melvin Lau, I found an entry on the. Indulge. He said the food review at indulge was free, I wonder if Kelvin gave him a treat, will ask Kelvin if I remember.
Anyway, here the link if you are interested (the page loads really slowly...have patient)
http://tiankongshini.blogspot.com/2008/03/indulge-in-indulge.html
It is a pretty old entry, March 2008. Wonder if Kelvin remembers...hmm...

The other blog is by this boy - Kelvin. His latest entry is on girls who like money and girls who say they like money. I actually like his thinking, and I agree with them. Though I would have to say, this theory applys to the male gender too. And I know sometimes I talk too much about money, and I will like kind of regret talking so much afterwards. I think it does gives others a good impression of me. But after reading his blog, I must say I am quite happy with myself, by his theory, I am actually with the better lot. LOL. Makes my day :) Getting off work now.

Here's the blog entry:

Went for Winston & Nard Nard's wedding last evening. Will blog about this next (In my private section), made me realised something about myself. :)

My 1st Flea Market!

  • 9th Mar, 2009 at 11:27 AM
Last week had been a really tiring week for me. I feel so dead now!

It is the annual The Hour Glass Private Salon Sale again and this time I got posted to the Gerald Genta/Daniel Roth/Alain Silberstein counter. Considered an important counter cause we have lots of overseas stocks to clear, therefore I felt pressured to sell. It is different from the previous sale where I was assign the Chopard/Cariter counters, I was movtiated to sell, however there was not much pressure... a lot of the pieces were consignament pieces. Plus, it was much easier to sell Chopard and Cariter, it is easier to explain gold and diamonds, compared to movement and complications... Which is what most people ask about when they come over to the Gerald Genta / Daniel Roth counters. There was one day where I stood at the Alain Sliberstein counter for the whole day and not sold a single piece. Man I was sad. But at least in the other days I managed to sell some GG and DR. :)

My legs aches after 4 long days of standing. And beauifully, Lynette managed to get us a flea market stall in Sunday! (I'm been waiting for this chance for a while now, so there is no way I will miss it.)  So there goes my only rest day. To prepare for my first flea market, everyday after I get home from my company's sale, I had to pack my stuff and pull together a pile of clothes, jewelly and other unwanted useful things to sell at the flea market. and on sunday, forced myself to wake up early AGAIN but this time to sell my own stuff. At least I get to pocket the profits. That is a very movtiaing factor. LOL

So anyway, since this is the first time for Kaizer and I, so we all listened to the wise advise of Lynette. So here's her plan
9.30am - pick up Hilda
9.40am - pick up Kaizer, then go East Coast KFC for breakfast.
11am - Reach the flea market to set up.

The flea market starts at 9am, but Lynette says no one come so early so why should we... so I agreed, expecially when it means I could sleep a little longer...

As usual, nothing went as plan, Lynette only reached my place at 10am, so basically all our timing went delayed by half hour, so we reach the flea market after 11am. ALL the other stores were setted up already. And everyone was kind of amazed to see us coming so late. At first we could not even find our stall, turned out it was right in front of us but a neighbour used it thinking that it was empty. They returned us the space and we started setting up.

Now imagine 3 girls trying to sell away our used stuff, did you know how much that is? Lynette's car's boot was full and we also used up half the back seat, it took 3 trips back to the car to completely bring everything out to the stall. And all the while, everyone else just looked at us. Could be because we were late, could be because we were pretty or maybe they were bored (no customers so we were the only entertainment) Actually, Lynette was quite right about coming in late. there wasn't alot of shoppers in the morning. It did not take us long to set up, since another great advise from Lynette is for us to just throw everything on the table, no need to pack the stuff nicely, a messy pile of clothes gives people a feeling that there are treasures underneath the pile so they would come and dug, plus I think by dugging through the pile, the customer will get a chance to touch and feel the clothes, it is natural for them to look at and consider each piece that they pull out, and they need to spend more time at our stall to look at the clothes, and other people will come over too because they would think that our stall must be offering a good deal if there are so many people standing there.

So anyway, the messy plan worked! When we got there, I threw the jewellerys in a box at the corner of one table (our stall is made up of 2 square tables), and threw the bags beside it. Then we just dump all the clothes onto the other table, (actually I just open my luggage bag and left it on the table and threw Kaizer and Lynette's clothes on top of it. Later kaizer had to remove the luggage because there were too many people and the luggage was getting into the way.) The crowd just came. We have not even completed taking out everything we had and we already sold some stuff. Later we took out the shoes for sale and display them under the table. And again, the moment we displayed the items, Kaizer sold her orange slippers and I sold a pair of handdrawn shoes which I bought from Thailand. This pair was so pretty that I bought it them even though it was one size too big, which turns out to be a mistake cause I really could not wear it out. I think the same thing happened to the girl who bought the shoes from me... it was too big for her and she still buys it anyway. It was good to know I was not the only person that is affected by that pair of shoes. BTW, it is so cute because there was a black cat drawn in each shoe. So unique!

Good stuff were all sold quickly as long as we were willing to lower the price a little. The later crowd is harder to handle, they bargain ALOT thinking that since we are closing, we should be more willing to sell at lower price, but there is a limit to how low we can go, and anyway we can always keep the clothes to sell another time. There was a customer who kept wanting to get 3 of Kaizer's braclets for $2 while she wants to sell at $3 (at this point, I have given very good discount for my items to the lady, and I kept telling her I give her the discount on my items but I cannot reduce the price for the braclets anymore... but she kept asking...) in the end, Kaizer got pissed off, she decided not to sell the items and took the braclets back and kept them in her bag. I think the lady regreted bargaining so hard. To lose 3 beautiful braclets over a dollar is STUPID.

At the end of the day, one of our neighbours told us, she was amazed by us, to come so late and do so well. She also asked if we do this often and she was more amazed to find out it was our first time too. :)

One thing about flea markets, while it is a good idea to sell off the stuff that you no longer need, it is quite sad when you have to sell off your stuff at $1 - $5, expecially when you bought them for over a hundred dollars. But as Lynette says (another wise advise) 'Would you rather keep the unused stuff at home and not use them and let them take up space or would you just sell them away and make a little money.' Which is quite true, it does not really matter how much you bought the items for in the beginning, now that you dun use them anymore, then they dun worth anything to you, so if you are able to sell it off, you should think of it as a pure profit business (other than the rental).. So therefore we have decided to do more of these flea markets, until we finish selling everything we ( includes ourselves, our mothers, our aunties, our mother-in-laws, our other half and etc)  dun need.

After that, I think we should only do it twice yearly. We can even start a mailing list for people who like our stuff. We had quite a number of customers asking us where we usually sell our stuff cause they like what we sell. I even thought of the tag line to start the mailing list.
'If you like our fashion sense, join our mailing list!' then in small text below 'to get updates to our whereabout for our twice a year clearence sale.' :) LOL
Can't wait for the next flea market!

Change again...

I think it is really ridiculous to lock up ALL my blog entries. I don't feel like writing much now, since it will be locked... so I have decide to move some to public viewing. But to my dear friends who wants to read the private blogs (they tend to be more interesting too... i guess... haha), please do remember to sign up and add me as friend.
